The bitter herbs are among the most widely used category in the world systems of herbal medicine. In this lecture we describe the general physiological and humoral effects of the bitter principles in plants, and then detail the diverse categories within this group including bitter alteratives, bitter tonic-astringents, aromatic bitters, bitter mints, bitter sedatives, bitter demulcents, bitter anodynes, and bitter laxative/tonics. Includes clinical applications and some formulas.
