Demulcent Yin Tonics in the Western Paradigm

Paul Bergner 2015

90 Minutes 1.5 CEU credits

Many deficient or exhausted patients present with systemic constitutional dryness. This state is recognized in all the traditional systems of medicine, and may be called Yin Deficiency in Chinese medicine. These conditions which so often accompany burnout and chronic fatigue can be corrected with improvement in the nutrition, adjustment of the humoral effects of the habitual diet, and also by moistening herbs. The Chinese herbs which increase the ability of the system to hold an retain moisture are called Yin tonics. We do not have the concept expressed directly with Western herbs, but do have the practice, most often found in herbs helpful for recovery in the post-fever syndrome. The lecture describes assessment of dryness in the patient, Common Western herbs that can be classified as Yin Tonics, and several herbs from Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine that are useful for this condition.
